Chignahuapan, along with other Magical Towns, is part of one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in Mexico, the Sierra Norte of Puebla.

Because of its slender relief and an orography full of cliffs, gorges, waterfalls, valleys, and lagoons, in this natural habitat, there are altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 meters above sea level, so it has varied climates, which can be warm, humid and cold.

In Chignahuapan, green is the predominant color, with many forested landscapes that seem to have come out of Sue Hubbell’s A Year in the Woods. It is the image we all carry in our collective unconscious.

Laguna Chignahuapan

This pristine lagoon is the one that gave its name to the Pueblo Mágico since its nine natural pools or springs are precisely what in Nahuatl means “Chignahuapan”. The lagoon enchants and captivates just by looking at it.

In its reflection, the clouds and the rays of the sun walk by; it invites you to take a boat or kayak ride, do some water sport, read a book on its calm shores, enjoy a picnic (kiosks with grills are available), eat in one of the restaurants around it, or participate—during September—in the Trout Fishing Tournament.

Location: 1.5 km west of the center of Chignahupan, in Teoconchila.

Giver of life

Its nine springs feed the Tulimán and Quetzalapan waterfalls. This 2.4 km long waterfall flows into the Tecolutla River in Veracruz.

“We think that life revolves around us, but we are a tiny percentage of what is alive.” Stefano Mancuso, founder of neurobiology.

Untamed strength:
El Salto de Quetzalapan waterfall.

On the border with Zacatlan, 7 km away from Chignahuapan, is the Salto de Quetzalapan waterfall and the tourist center developed around this abundant waterfall of 200 meters high. The water that falls is from the Quetzalapan River, the one that comes from the Chignahuapan Lagoon.

And here people rappel on one side of the waterfall, lose their fear of heights on the zip line that passes over it, allow children to do the same on the children’s zip line that crosses the river, or walk along the high-voltage cable arranged to give a little adrenaline to those who cross it. There is also an area reserved for camping.

Fun and safety
The Centro Ecoturístico Cascada Salto de Quetzalapan offers its visitors can do rappel, zip line, archery, crossing a high-tension suspension bridge, and barbecue grills to end the day with the family.

General admission is $50.00MNX. Reservations Whatsapp 79 7118 9907.

Location: Take Highway 119 towards Zacatlan and turn right, where you find the dirt road that leads to it.

Do leg and breathe

To reach the waterfalls it is necessary to descend 365 stone steps. The locals will tell you that one was placed for each day of the year. Yes, it may sound a bit demanding, but the reward is the fresh, pure air and the formidable views, not to mention the fact that your heart will be strengthened.

Forests: the ancient temples

The natural vegetation of the Sierra Norte de Puebla is essentially composed of tropical evergreen forest, mesophilic mountain forest and coniferous, pine, oyamel and oak forests.

••••●•••••●••••
As biologist José Víctor Peralta says, the Sierra Norte de Puebla is one of the most important regions of the state in terms of its macrofauna—it contains approximately 85% of Puebla’s species.

Oasis to enjoy
These forests are friendly for ecotourist camping developments, such as Llano del Conejo, where you can hike through the forest, camp and have campfires to spend the night..

The forest and the cosmos

Shamans tell us that the archetype of the tree symbolizes the relationships between cosmic regions. The roots are related to the underworld and the sacred plants; the trunk to everyday reality; and its branches to the guides, the divinity. The image of the forest and the heart of each of its trees gives us balance.

••••●•••••●••••
The inhabitants of this Pueblo Mágico understand and assume this, so they respect nature and by visiting their forest you will be able to join in an intimate way to this unique way of seeing the things that surround us. And that is a priceless gift.

The best view of this Magical Town is obtained from Cerro Colorado, where it is possible to admire the valley and the colorful houses with tile roofs.

The dam reminiscent
of a Canadian lake:
Cuautelolulco

Dams, besides being a component of great importance in the preservation of water for human consumption, agricultural irrigation and the production of clean energy, have become an essential part of the beauty of our environments, as in the case of the Cuautelolulco Dam, located just 13 km from the Chignahuapan Downtown.

••••●•••••●••••
It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature and it is possible to perform activities such as

camping, observation of the flora and fauna, hiking, boat rides, horseback riding, biking, or sport fishing.
